International Women’s Day_ 8th March
International Women’s Day started from workers’ protests and equality movements, grew into a global campaign, and is now a day to both celebrate progress and push for women’s rights.
The history of International Women’s Day (March 8) goes back to labor movements and the fight for women’s rights in the early 20th century.
🌍 Early beginnings (1900s)
In 1908, thousands of women workers in New York City marched to demand better working conditions, shorter hours, and voting rights.
In 1909, the first National Woman’s Day was observed in the United States, organized by the Socialist Party of America.
🌍 International idea (1910)
In 1910, at a conference in Copenhagen, a German activist, Clara Zetkin, proposed creating an international day for women to demand equal rights.
The idea was accepted by women from many countries.
🌍 First celebrations (1911)
The first International Women’s Day was celebrated in 1911 in countries like Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.
Millions of people joined rallies demanding women’s rights to vote, work, and hold public office.
🌍 Link to Russia (1917)
In 1917, women in Petrograd protested for “bread and peace” during World War I.
This protest helped spark the Russian Revolution.
After this, March 8 became widely recognized as International Women’s Day.
🌍 Global recognition
In 1975, the United Nations officially began celebrating International Women’s Day.
Today, it is observed worldwide to celebrate achievements and continue the fight for gender equality.
